Havana: The Cuban deputies will elect today the president of the Republic of Cuba and other high positions of the State, which complies with the letter of the Constitution approved in April, Prensa Latina publishes.

It will be a historic session of the National Assembly of Popular Power (ANPP), where they will elect their president, vice president and secretary, who will occupy equal responsibilities in the State Council.

The members of this body will also be elected today, as will the vice president of the Caribbean country for the new presidential term.

The State Council represents the ANPP between one session and another. It executes the agreements of the Parliament and fulfills other functions that the Constitution and the law attribute to it.

To reach this moment, the Parliament approved the new Electoral Law in July and also issued the approval of the deputies to the National Candidacy Commission.

This commission is made up of representatives of the most important and massive organizations of Cuban society.

In September, the National Candidacy Commission carried out a consultation process with the representatives of the ANPP to collect personally and secretly their proposals on those legislators who, in their opinion, should integrate the candidacy projects.

The president of the elected Republic must be 35 years old and no more than 60 in his first term; be in full enjoyment of civil and political rights, be a Cuban citizen by birth and have no other citizenship.

These are requirements met by President Miguel Díaz-Canel, who to be reelected requires an absolute majority in the vote of the deputies. His re-election gives him a five-year term extendable for another five consecutive years, after which he cannot perform it again.

The Cuban Constitution gives the Head of State important responsibilities and powers, including participating by his own right in meetings of the State Council.

Also ensure respect for the Constitution and laws; represent the State and direct its general policy; relations with other States and the one related to national defense and security.

Likewise, the president presents the members of the Council of Ministers to the ANPP, including the Prime Minister, and presides over the meetings of this governing body.

The head of State of Cuba performs the supreme leadership of the armed institutions, presides over the National Defense Council and proposes to the Parliament or State Council to declare the State of War or war in case of military aggression.
