Cuba: Despite the almost 60 years of the US blockade of Cuba, the island today shows remarkable achievements in social matters and meets several goals set in the Sustainable Development Goals,  Radio Habana Cuba reports.

This is how the alternate permanent representative of Cuba to the UN, Ana Silvia Rodríguez, highlighted and offered details to the General Assembly on how the hostile American policy worsens this year with the application of the extraterritorial Title III of the Helms Burton Act.

Although my country is a small island state in development, also subject to the adverse effects of powerful hurricanes, droughts and climate change, it is currently the second in the world with the lowest value in the Multidimensional Poverty Index, she recalled.

In fact, she added, it is the only nation in Latin America and the Caribbean that has eliminated severe child malnutrition, according to the 2018 UNICEF Report.

In addition, it appears fifth among the first 14 countries that managed to reduce the Index of hunger and malnutrition in a sustained manner for several years, the Cuban diplomat said.

It was questioned how the commitment to eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions can be reached, if nations like the United States dedicate multimillion-dollar resources in military expenses that could be devoted to development.

In addition, based on the concept of sharing the island's modest resources with other nations in need, international cooperation currently has more than 60,000 Cuban health collaborators present in 65 countries, Rodriguez said.

She noted that with the Cuban Literacy Program "Yo si puedo," recognized by Unesco, millions of adults have been taught to read and write in 28 countries.
