Havana, Cuba_ The Cuban Women’s Federation (FMC) turns today 56 years committed to work of promoting women's empowerment, gender equality and contribute to the achievement of these objectives globally, Prensa Latina reported.

With about four million members, the FMC carries out policies and programs at all levels of society, from the neighborhoods and citizens' initiatives to national health plans and education.

However, the organization needs to resemble more the interests, aspirations and needs of its members in the twenty-first century, as they themselves have expressed in their meetings.

In recent days, during the preparations for the anniversary celebration, the FMC authorities emphasized the relevance to strengthen, stabilize and rejuvenate the basic structures of the organization.

"We are looking for the weaknesses of the organization in order to strengthen the unity of women and get close to the young girls through projects that fulfill their expectations," Maida Brito, secretariat of the federation in Havana expressed.

According to her and other leaders, although the FMC is actively working through centers such as the Houses of Orientation for Women and the Family, these spaces do not exploit all its possibilities.

Contribute to the training and welfare of future generations, to accompany women and help single mothers are among the historic goals of the organization, but the very nature of the progresses experienced since its creation, leaves no room for the full satisfaction so far achieved.

Therefore, FMC’s members include in their action plan the constant improvement of their conquests and, of course, devote special attention to gender issues whose analysis and study have been 'in crescendo' during the XXI century.

Such is the case of change in the mentality of people and the fight against social level stereotypes and stigmas, and against the various manifestations of domestic violence.
