William Soler Cardiology Center Celebrates 30 anniversary

Havana, Cuba_ The William Soler Pediatric Cardiology Center arrives to its three decades of work next August 26 “giving security to the families", as Fidel said when speaking of how much has represented for the Cuban people to have this high technology health institution as part of the national system, Granma newspaper publishes.

As doctor Herminia Palenzuela López, coordinator of the National Cardio pediatric Net, remembers that before the creation in 1982 of this Pediatric center the infant mortality rate was of 14 for each thousand born alive, of which three children died for congenital cardiovascular illnesses.

"Today, when children mortality decreases at 4,4, the death rate for this kind of congenital pathologies mortality is of 0,31 for each thousand born alive", she said. The history has given the reason to the Commandant.

The doctor also remarked that since its creation more than 9000 cardiovascular operations have been carried out in this institution, and the survival rate has increased to 92 percent.

On the other hand, the specialist explained that interventions with catheters carried out in the institution constitute a technique to supplant the necessity of surgical treatment of several affections.

But for the doctor Eugenio Flat Selman-Housein, director of the institution, one of the main values of this health center is based in the National Program of Cardiovascular Rehabilitation, "because we don't only try to save the patients’ life but we also make an effort to assure a better quality of life and their useful incorporation to the society."

Flat Selman-Housein emphasized the decisive role of the Infants’ Heart Rehabilitation Center, subordinated to the Pediatric Cardio center.

This assistance unit is also rector of the National Cardio pediatric, Net an enormous strength with a specialized attention and opportune remission to each boy or Cuban girl that needs it, since the prenatal stage.

It is about offering the biggest tranquility and security to the family and the patient. It is, simply, that the most valuable thing is the life, and these 30 years have been worthy to achieve that.
