Havana, Cuba_ Cuba's First Vice President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, will head his country's delegation to the Fourth Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC by its Spanish initials), Prensa Latina publishes.

In a press conference in this capital, Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno expressed that the Caribbean nation will attend the regional meeting to be held in Ecuador on January 27th, with the aim of contributing to the strengthening of the organization.

CELAC is extremely important for Cuba, Moreno said, recalling the words of the president of the island, Raul Castro, when last December called it an indispensable, legitimate, unitary and diverse policy coordination and integration mechanism.

At the same time, he said the Caribbean country is very interested in the more than 20 special statements being prepared ahead of the match of the block formed in Caracas, Venezuela, in 2011.

Among them, said Deputy Foreign Minister, is essential to Cuba the one condemning the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States to the island for over half a century, a position of rejection to thate policy that has been present in all summits of CELAC.

He added that this year the resolution will include a call for the US Congress to approve the end of such measures and ask President Barack Obama to use his executive powers to ease its application.

The Greater Antilles will also give particular attention to a document calling for the return of the territory illegally occupied by the US Naval Base in Guantanamo, located in the east of Cuba, against the will of the Government and people of the island.

Another significant resolution, Moreno stated, will address the issue of migration and it will reject the selective policies of countries out the in the region that treat migrants differently depending on their place of origin.

To a question from Prensa Latina, the Deputy Minister also reported that in the context of the meeting the Cuban delegation will hold several bilateral meetings that are being prepared.

The Fourth CELAC Summit the will be held at the headquarters of the Union of South American Nations in the Middle of the World City, about 15 kilometers north of Quito.

At least 22 heads of state or government from the 33 countries that form the block already have already confirmed their attendance, according to sources of Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry.
