Havana, Cuba_ The President Raul Castro welcomed Pope Francis at José Marti International Airport, as part of a meeting with the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, his Holiness Kirill, Telesur reported.

The high representative of the Catholic Church is in Cuba to meet with the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, Kirill.

The religious leaders will talk about the relationships between the two churchs and the international context. During the meeting it is expected a joint statement.

This meeting between the Russian Patriarch and Pope Francis will be the first in almost a millennium since the great schism in the Christianity or the rupture between the West and the East in 1054.

After his stay in Cuba, the Pope will continue his travel to Mexico where he will be until February 17th. He will be the third pope to visit officially that country.
