Guantánamo__ Pacifists, anti-war activists and defenders of the just causes of the people gather here today and until May 6 at the Fifth International Seminar for Peace and the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases, Prensa Latina reports.

According to the organizers, about 300 people attend the event that through workshops, panels and debates will address different issues related to the arms race and militarism carried out by the United States and its allies, against which they will pronounce.

They added that other of the central axes of this international meeting will be the return of the illegal territory occupied in this province against the legitimate will of the Cuban people, where Washington maintains a naval base, which occupies more than 117 square kilometers and is the oldest the northern nation owns.

The celebration of this seminary in this city has a great symbolic importance, Silvio Platero, president of the Cuban Movement for Peace said.

Platero added that the main objective of the event is the exchange of experiences and opinions related to issues of great global concern for the increase of military bases and the diversification of its objectives of interest such as river sources and mining areas.

Nuclear disarmament, military bases as war forces, their negative effects and denunciations of the interventionist policy of the great powers, will also focus the debates, he said.

He stressed that the Fifth Seminar will reaffirm once again the validity of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace approved by all Heads of State and Government of the region gathered in Havana in January 2014 at the II Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
