Havana_ Democrat Ron Wyden, a member of the US Senate Finance Committee, introduced the draft Cuba Trade Act 2017, with a view to establishing normal commercial relations with the Caribbean country, Radio Habana Cuba publishes.

The proposal to lift the blockade imposed on Cuba more than 55 years ago counts on the co-sponsorship of six party members: Patrick Leahy, Dianne Feinstein, Richard Durbin, Tom Udall, Patty Murray and Jeff Merkley.

The initiative would remove the "main statutes codifying sanctions" against Cuba, including those established in the 1996 by the Helms-Burton Act, the Torricelli Act of 1992, and other provisions affecting bilateral trade and investment.

The Senator from Oregon said his bill presents an alternative vision that looks to the future and encourages the exchange of ideas and trade between the two nations.

According to the legislator, decades of experience have shown that the blockade will never improve the lives of the inhabitants of the Cuban territory and, on the other hand, it only serves to close to North American exporters a natural market for US agricultural and manufactured goods.

Wyden was one of several Republican and Democrat members of Congress who in June expressed their rejection of Trump's decision to step back in the process of normalizing ties with the Island.

In addition, he is one of the co-sponsors of the Freedom of Travel Act to Cuba, which has the support of 55 members of the upper house.
