Havana, Cuba_ About 82 percent of Cuba's 500 sandy beaches are showing signs of erosion, Odalys Goicochea, an expert from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), warned, Prensa Latina reports

'Cuban spas have coastal setbacks averaging 1.2 meters per year, which could be higher in some sectors of the coast,' the specialist told.

The director of Environment at CITMA pointed out that for many years many facilities were built on the dunes, contributing to the destruction and deterioration of the beaches.

Several actions are being implemented for its protection, such as the construction of hotels after the first coastline, Goicochea said.

Cuban authorities are developing a comprehensive project to protect and recover eroded beaches as part of a government plan known as 'Tarea Vida', which seeks to mitigate the effects of climate change, the official added.

The Cuban environmental policy reflects the importance of the coastal zone and the elements that make it up, such as sandy beaches, the CITMA representative said.
