Havana, Cuba_ Cuba will join up 800 megawatts to its electric power system between 2022 and 2024 with a state Russian credit of up to 1,200 billion Euros, in a project to be executed in an eight years term.
Edier Guzman, director of Power Stations’ Development from state-run energy company Union Electrica (UNE), explained that this purpose will be possible with the implementation of a project agreed between the governments of Cuba and Russia in October 2015, to build four new generating units that will expand the capacity and cover the demand of the state and domestic sector,.
The contract signed by the Russian company Inter RAO Export and the Cuban firm Energoimport, belonging to UNE, is now in preparation for its entry into force in April, stage that is fulfilled according to the plan and without setbacks, to later move to the selection of the entity in charge of designing the plans and then starting the basic engineering.
The document provides for the construction of four generating units of 200 megawatt each at the "Maximo Gomez" power station in Mariel, and three in East Havana, located in the island's western region, the area of greatest demand and requires electricity transfers especially during the rush hour of the eastern region.
This is a contract of extension of the mentioned power plants with the use of Cuban crude fuel, which will be implemented in eight years and involve almost all ministries.
