Mayabeque, Cuba_ The Local Agricultural Innovation Program (PIAL) favors the development of peasant production, both endogenously and sustainably in some municipalities of Mayabeque.

After several years of implementation of PIAL, positive results can be seen from collective participation, environmental sustainability, respect for peasant traditions, gender and generational equity

The member of the national coordination team Rosa Acosta Roca told Radio Mayabeque digital that in six of the eleven municipalities of Mayabeque, the agricultural innovation program is implemented with evident results.

According to Acosta Roca, it is important the experimentation of the peasants as a way to develop the farms and cooperatives participating in the program. With the articulated work researcher-producer, we have achieved the certification and identification of varieties improved by the producers themselves.

One of those experiences is the achievement of a new variety of corn. The result of the experiment has been improved at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (INCA) and adapted to local conditions.

Another aspect of interest is the productive diversification of the farms and the promotion of local seed banks as a mechanism to have alternatives in case of catastrophes.

The agricultural innovation program makes possible the increase of agricultural yields, the use of new varieties and the application of products elaborated in the INCA and other parts of the country, favors the improvement of the soils, the generation of agro-ecological practices to be applied in the farms, as well as the training of students of different levels using the scenarios of the project.

So far, says the member of the PIAL national coordination team, Rosa Acosta Roca, the general results are very positive.

This Program is led by INCA in coordination with Aura Acción Alemana, WHH, and financed by the Swiss agency for development and cooperation, COSUDE.
