Mayabeque, Cuba_ Mayabeque could become one of the first provinces in the country to promote the recovery of yam cultivation, a product that practically disappeared in recent years due to the lack of seed.
Today, its reproduction is possible thanks to a biotechnological innovation. With this objective arrived in Madruga from the East of the country, the engineer Mistervino Borges García, professor of the Granma University and researcher of the Vegetable Biotechnology Studies Center of the province.
The purpose is to encourage the production of high quality and nutritional values yams that can contribute to the food security that agriculture seeks in the country and that also has medicinal values.
"Its consumption brings benefits for diabetics, has less complex carbohydrates and helps to purify the blood”, the specialist said.
There is no doubt that science and technology represent a significant contribution to the development of agriculture and the achievement of food sovereignty.
In Madruga they will begin the cultivation of yams and a provincial fair will be held in December of this year with the first harvest, in the effort to extend its reproduction to the rest of the municipalities of Mayabeque.
