Mayabeque, Cuba_ A curious variety of sweet potato is planted in areas of the municipality of Melena del Sur, during the spring season, from March 1 to August 31.
"Among its characteristics, the food is orange inside, due to the concentration of beta-carotene (β-carotene), because it contains a set of necessary properties for the body," said the agricultural director of the local Agribusiness enterprise, Alberto Gallo Socorro.
This variety could become a product not only essential for national consumption, but also a significant generator of income for the country's economy.
"It is demanded by Mexico and European zones. Market studies are being carried out”, Gallo Socorro added.
The tuber is a food of recognized effectiveness, in the fight against malnutrition in different regions, due to its nutritional characteristics, ease of cultivation and productivity.
