Mayabeque, Cuba: The presence of specimens of African giant snail, in La Güira farm close to the former Pre-University Institute Sierra Maestra, alerted the authorities and population in general of the municipality of Melena del Sur.
"So far only one focus has been located and we are already working on its elimination," said the specialist of the Direction of Agriculture and medium agronomy technician, Daisel Alfonso Oliva.
According to the head of plant health of the Agricultural Company of the territory, the engineer Nelson Curbelo Fernández, the rapid expansion of the invasive mollusk is today a threat to human health, the balance of biodiversity and agriculture.
It is necessary to know that this invasive exotic species, which is among the hundred most harmful, can affect up to 250 varieties of plants, due to its high voracity, and in turn, other animal species by constituting a competition in the search for foods.
