Mayabeque, Cuba: Protecting the ecosystem and its resources is one of the fundamental tasks of man, for this reason the state forest service of the municipality of Quivicán carries out actions for its care.

In the protected area Monte Sotolongo, one of those areas rich in flora and fauna, specialists work to rebuild the forest through projects that provide silvi´-cultural treatments to raise the quality of trees and recover native species of the place.

The specialist who takes care of the area, Hortelio Oramas Gutiérrez, said that the measures are insufficient because illegal acts are still reported such as hunting of animals from the site and damage to forest heritage.

Monte Sotolongo is a wooded area that protects the Cuenca Sur aquifer system, its protection goes beyond the care of flora and fauna, as it also supplies other resources to other provinces.
