This is a month of important events for Melena del Sur, today November 5 is very special, 58 years ago it was declared as the first municipality free of illiteracy in Cuba and America.
In the primary school 5 de Noviembre, little children, accompanied by their teachers and representatives of that generation, starred in another unforgettable day in which there was no lack of homage to the martyr child of the literacy campaign, Alberto Herrera Prado, pride of the southern municipality.
More than five decades have passed since Fidel summoned the entire people, to the most noble, beautiful and extraordinary battle for full freedom and dignity.Â
Turning barracks into schools was the most overwhelming confrontation of ignorance and perfidy. To declare at the headquarters of the United Nations Organization (UN) the challenge of overcoming illiteracy in a year was the most convincing evidence of confidence in the capacities and will of the people.Â
Those present at the event remembered with their testimonies and experiences how Melena del Sur would become the first municipality in the country to conquer its true place in the new homeland.
They remembered nostalgic, but proud, how the campaign was organized, the promptness and enthusiasm they put to the task and those months that followed, of total agitation.Â
Intense days lived the residents of Melena del Sur, months of sacrifice, delivery, challenges, where teaching and learning were the words of order, until the epic ended a day like today of 1961.
