Mayabeque, Cuba_ More than 200 patients from the province have received medical assistance in the Surgical Ophthalmology Unit of the Leopoldito MartÃnez General Teaching Hospital in San José de las Lajas, since the creation of the service on December 30, 2016 until the end of October, Radio Camoa publishes.
The fact of having two well-equipped rooms and 17 specialists among doctors and nurses with the ideal preparation, favored the success in more than 200 pterygium surgeries and benign eyelid tumors performed in the period.
Although in smaller amount due to the deficit of the most demanded intraocular lenses, 40 cataract operations that benefited mainly the elderly of the territory were also successful, according to Carlos González RodrÃguez, Head of the Ophthalmology Service of the demarcation.
Approaching this type of surgeries, known as clean ambulatory to the territory, represents an advance in the health care by favoring the diagnosis and timely treatment of diseases that can lead to blindness, such as cataracts, especially in the elderly.
Despite being far from the statistics that were aspired when the ophthalmological surgery service was inaugurated in San José de las Lajas, the professionalism of the specialists who materialize this idea set a precedent in the history of Cuban medicine and its scope in Mayabeque.
