Mayabeque, Cuba_ The therapeutic vaccine against lung cancer began to be applied to patients suffering from this illness, at Emilia de Córdoba Policlinic in San Nicolás, as part of a clinical trial of the Molecular Engineering Center.

According to the specialist who attends vaccination at the primary care center, Mayelín Fuentes Benítez, the product has low levels of toxicity and therefore generates less adverse effects. On the other hand, it is very easy to apply subcutaneously, which favors its administration in healthcare centers close to patients’ residencies.

She also explained that the use of this type of treatment complements conventional therapy such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. "These vaccines do not prevent or cure but they do contribute to controlling the disease and improve the quality of life of the patient, especially when the tumor is in advanced stages”, Fuentes Benítez added.

In the polyclinic, a medical therapy room was set up with the necessary conditions for the procedure, with a group of specialists that includes a clinician, a nurse, a psychologist and two pharmacy assistants.
