Mayabeque, Cuba: Some 180 tons of charcoal should be exported by the Agroforestry Company of Mayabeque in 2019, an incipient number still in the attempt to break through in the demanding Western market, where this line is highly valued for its craftsmanship and qualities: blue flame , without smoke and ash.

This implies the strict quality control, from the selection of the raw material (size, hardness, weight, color and sound) to the manufacturing process, storage and packaging, indispensable requirements, which guarantee the confidence of the customers and the future growth of this branch.

The concern now lies in the use of adequate wood. In the silvicultural units located in Nueva Paz, Madruga (the best in the province) Güines and Batabanó work, among other species, with júcaro, casuarina and marabú, which became the "jewel in the crown" due to its magnificent conditions for making coal.

After its "rediscovery", this bush, which still infests the fields of the Island and became a real headache, has other perspectives today.

By the end of May of this year, the Agroforestry Company of Mayabeque had sent, mainly to Europe, with the protection of the Cubaexport firm, five containers of charcoal, each with approximately 19 tons (in value, about 40 thousand dollars) .

The production plan exceeds the 129 percent and everything indicates that it will continue that way for the rest of the year, supported by the improvement of workers' compensation.

Cuba has become one of the main producers and exporters of charcoal in the world, with preference in Portugal, Spain and the Middle East.

Mayabeque, due to the natural characteristics and potential (useable idle areas), can still consolidate this line, with little investment and clean profits, to which the necessary infrastructure must be secured to allow the takeoff and ascending results.
