Mayabeque, Cuba_ The critical period (January-May) of the campaign against forest fires in 2015-2016 ended in Mayabeque with more than 300 hectares of forest affected.
Despite decreasing the number of fire, in relation to the previous period, the damaged areas in the province increased both in forest fires as grassland.
According to Yoanka Amer Estrada, head of the protection management of natural resources group in this demarcation, at the end of this campaign eight forest fires took place, which also affected 505 hectares of marsh grassland. There were also detected 15 fires in non-forest areas.
The three major fires occurred in Madruga’s Antonio Maceo Agricultural Production Cooperative (CPA), Mayabeque Beach Pier and Lomas de Galindo protected area in Santa Cruz del Norte
The negligence associated with illegal hunting and fishing, burning garbage, unattended coal furnaces are among the main causes of these events.
