Mayabeque, Cuba_ Mayabeque will apply a strategy in the agri-food sector, implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Environment Agency, among other institutions to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce vulnerabilities through good farming practices.
The proposal is currently being implemented in Artemisa, Pinar del Río and Camagüey, with positive results, according to Juan Mario Martínez Suárez, director of the Environmental Bases for Food Security and Sustainability (BASAL) project in the country.
He added that since years ago there is a strategy in Cuba and they are carrying out a series of joint actions with the Ministry of Agriculture, to minimize or eliminate barriers such as lack of knowledge, as well as to work for a better use of water, proper management of soils and associated productive systems that provide agro-technological information to producers and capacity building in municipalities.
The BASAL project includes a group of tools, which deal with climate modeling, environmental management and plans for confrontation and adaptation to climate change in the agricultural sector.
Martínez Suárez expressed the importance of extending this experience to Mayabeque, especially in the management of information, transmit knowledge about successful practices in other areas where they have made interventions.
BASAL is funded by the European Union and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
