Mayabeque, Cuba_ The use of the lombriculture at Liliana Dimitrova Institute of Horticultural Research, in Quivicán is aimed at using sistematically environmental management practices with cleaner production, as an alternative for the ecological management of waste.
According to data published in a bulletin of the entity, they have implemented since two years ago an area for the production of humus worm at a small scale, composed of three beds or concrete and steel channels.
Since then the fertilizer harvest has grown to about 14 tons per year, to satisfy the production of seedlings in root crops. The organic matter is obtained from the bovine excrement, although they are evaluating the possibility of using other solid residues.
This achievement is due to the work of agricultural assistant research Juan Echazábal Álvarez, the main responsible for the activity.
According to Liliana Dimitrova’s estimates the worm humus should be harvested at least five times a year, every 80 days approximately. The species for these purposes is Eisenia foetida, known as Californian Red.
As part of the follow-up of the institute's environmental strategy, the attention to the lombriculture area is a prioritized task. Its practice is recommended to producers as a requirement for obtaining higher quality food.
The worm humus is one of the best organic fertilizers; it has a high content of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium, essential elements for the development of plants. In addition it has high possibilities of commercialization in the world because its results.
