Mayabeque, Cuba__ The achievement of new Cuban varieties of rice is the result of researches carried out in Pinar del Río’s, Los Palacios Technological Scientific Unit belonging to the National Institute of Agricultural Science (INCA) in Mayabeque, the digital site of Radio Camoa publishes.
The Genetic Improvement Program for rice cultivation, implemented in this experimental station, in close relation with the Institute of Grain Research and INCA’s Improvement of Plants Department, has allowed eliminating the import of seeds from abroad to enhance the agricultural production of this crop.
This was assured by the Doctor of Sciences Alexander Miranda Caballero, director of this center, who added that these studies are also intended to obtain new varieties of this cereal and other grains, more resistant to climate change.
The INCA rice cultivars LP - 2, 4, 5, 7 and 14, exhibit benefits for Cuban agriculture, as they are more tolerant to salinity, drought and major pests; they present good results in terms of agricultural and industrial yields and some of them occur in a shorter cycle that guarantees the economy of water.
