A few days ago, Hurricane Matthew affected the eastern region of the country, especially Guantanamo’s municipalities of Baracoa, Maisi and Imías, but talking about baseball, the team leading this nickname in the National Series did not cause much damage to their rivals.

The recently concluded qualifying stage of the Cuban Baseball Classic ended for Mayabeque’s team with very similar figures to the previous one.

The amount of victories was the same, 11, as it was also the final location, 16 and as in the 55 season, the number of games played by a run rose to 12.

If we analyze the statistics, we do not move, on the contrary we moved back in the three important departments of the game.

The batting average of 243 was the lowest of the tournament, the pitching was only surpassed by Isla de la Juventud, the pitching staff was the most batted allowing 311 hits, 46 of them were homeruns, the defense behaved to 968, with 54 errors, also in the penultimate place among participants.

Thus, taking into account the absence of players who were key for the team’s aspirations, it is very difficult to talk about results; however, it is encouraging that most of the criteria I hear about the team are favorable.

Now it’s time for the analysis of what could have been better, there are elements to discuss, because if we justify the result by saying that it is enough according to the team we have, then we would be conformists.

My respect for the boys who took the huge responsibility to play ball at the highest level in the country, without being prepared to do so.

They showed that it is possible and I think that was the general reflection of the athletes leaded by Vannoy Arado, try to do more with less.

If they succeeded or not I will give that to the consideration of each baseball’s supporters in Mayabeque. For me, although the Hurricanes’ damage was minimal, this left its mark of discipline, dedication and respect for the fans from the beginning to the end.
