The man that was and it is the star that illuminates the path of many Cubans. The personality of the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro Ruz, is today more in force than ever in the hearts of all Cubans. His delivery, sacrifice and defense of just causes made him become a model and guide of the Revolution.

The municipality of Melena del Sur remembers the historical leader, who was on this land when it was just a town with few inhabitants, a bastion of tireless struggle.

This is stated by Sergio Curbelo, who was present the first time the Commander visited this area, at the end of the 40s.

The undefeated Commander in Chief illuminated this town again with his presence when in 1961 the first territory free of illiteracy was proclaimed in Latin America. Barbara Palenzuela still remembers that night when she reached the podium where Fidel was speaking.

The special period forced to adopt measures to guarantee the feeding of the peope. This is how the Basic Units of Cooperative Production were created. The first of its kind founded in the country was Simón Rodríguez, in Melena del Sur.

Fidel attended the opening ceremony and talks with the workers. This is remembered by Evaristo Manuel García Martínez, who at that time managed the entity.

Many are the anecdotes told by the inhabitants of the area, who with each word immortalize the presence of the biggest of the Caguairáns in the locality.

Pronouncing his name provokes an indescribable admiration and a sea of ​​uncontrollable emotions in the throat, but also summons the irrevocable commitment not to abandon the strongest battles, fight with optimism and faith in victory.
