Virginio Gómez Reyes, was born in the municipality of San José de las Lajas, on May 19, 1913. Of humble origin, he knew since childhood the work of the field, was a cutter cane and worked in various agricultural jobs.

At the end of 1930 he began to work at the Belén school, he also took his brother Manuel to work. There he met the young Fidel Castro and established a friendship between them that last until death.

When Fidel finishes his studies in the center, he maintains communication with Gómez Reyes and his brother and shares with them a struggle within the Orthodox Party.

A few months after the coup d'état of March 10, 1952, he joined the cell of La Ceiba, directed by Fernando Chenard and participated in some of the demonstrations and military training sessions at the University of Havana and on inland farms of the province.

After the coup, the honest members of the Orthodox Party understood that their struggle through that organization was impossible.

He participated in the clandestine preparation of the insurrection. His apartment in Havana was the scene of important meetings.

At the time of the assault on the Moncada barracks, he traveled to Santiago de Cuba. Assigned to the detachment whose mission was to penetrate the Moncada by post three, once the action failed, he could not escape. He was imprisoned, tortured and murdered that very day.
