Havana_ The president of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, rejected the new sanctions of the United States against Venezuela in the oil sector, which also seek to affect the Island, and described them as imperial arrogance, Prensa Latina reports.
In his Twitter account, the president said that the measures announced by Washington to vessels and companies involved in the transportation of fuel between Cuba and Venezuela are an act of extraterritoriality and interference.
Díaz-Canel recalled that the bilateral exchange of goods and services constitutes a legal activity, protected by commercial agreements.
Havana and Caracas launched in 2004 an initiative that became the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) based on solidarity and economic complementation, to which other nations joined .
Yesterday, the US Vice President, Mike Pence, announced the sanctions against 34 vessels owned or operated by Pdvsa (Petróleos de Venezuela), as well as two additional companies that transport crude oil to Cuba.
The United States leads an international crusade to impose a regime change in Venezuela and accuses Cuba of being the support of President Nicolás Maduro, whom they don’t recognize, despite his categorical triumph in last May's elections.
The oil sector, from which the South American nation depends for access to foreign currency, has been the main target of sanctions aimed at economic suffocation.
In the wake of Pence's announcement, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, qualified last night as economic piracy, Washington's new measures, which add to a long list of actions against Venezuelan officials, companies and sectors.
Rodriguez said that the sanctions are part of the objective of the current administration in the White House to steal the resources of the South American country, but they will fail.
Regarding Cuba, he stressed that 60 years of imperialist aggression have not broken the will of the inhabitants of the island.
"The new measures that are celebrated today by senior anti-Cuban officials and politicians in the United States will not succeed. They know that they go against the sense of history and the majority will of the American people”.
