Havana, Cuba: Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel called for a permanent linkage to sciences to develop the national industry, as part of the modernization of the sector, Prensa Latina reports.

During a meeting to monitor packaging programs, Diaz-Canel stressed the need to link industries with universities and research centers permanently, according to the wesbsite of the Cuban Presidency.

He invited young engineers who are working in the sector to pursue master's degrees and doctorates to boost the industry in the light of technological obsolescence.

The meeting, which was attended by several ministers, also analyzed the investment program to gradually replace containers that ensure exportable lines.

As a result, 480 exportable lines were identified that demand 2,782 types of containers and packages, 1,642 of which were made in Cuba and 1,140 were imported.

The projection of investments until 2025 amounts to 280 million pesos to guarantee 19 products for containers that are currently imported, it was reported at the meeting.

Policies to substitute imports, based on domestic industrial production, will save nearly 100 million dollars.

In that regard, the Cuban president urged to search for financing formulas to replace administrative mechanisms with more economic ones.

The president called to manufacture spare parts in the country as long as the capacity to do so exists, to analyze the workload of current machinery and to make the most from existing technologies.
