Mayabeque, Cuba_ Mayabeque’s athlete Francisco Ronnei Estévez Quintero, from Bejucal, became the first athlete in the province to win the first absolute place of the traditional career Half Marathon Olympic Ideal, which since 2011 takes place on August 13, date of the birth of the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz
The emblematic race is one of the most important events in the territory, which has the characteristic of being the only one in Cuba that begins in one municipality and ends in another after traveling the 21 kilometers with 97 and a half meters from San Jose de las Lajas, capital of the territory and Güines.
Estévez Quintero spent one hour and 12 minutes on the exhausting route, in which they were punished by strong sun that prevented improving the record of 1.06.49 of Richer Pérez from Havana, imposed in the third edition held in 2013. Mayabeque’s athlete was escorted by Luis Ángel Martínez, from Guantanamo, and Havana’s Frank Daniel Castro.
Among the ladies, the first to arrive was Liliana Batista Columbié, followed by Mayda Caridad Lantigua and Aynara Figueredo, all from the Cuban capital.
The sports competition began at seven in the morning with 152 runners in the Half Marathon representing 12 provinces, a representative of the Isla de la Juventud and a Spaniard. One hour and 12 minutes later Estévez Quintero arrived victorious at the final goal in Güines.
Thousands of people witnessed and stimulated the participants throughout the race. After the contest, the best three of each category and sex were awarded, including the members of associations for disabled people.
The end of the race was attended by the top leaders of the province led by Janina de la Nuez Aclich, first secretary of the Party in Mayabeque and Tamara Valido Benitez, president of the Government to that instance and Rolando Quiñónez, director of Provincial Sports.
