It is one of the 11 municipalities of Mayabeque province, characterized by being an agricultural municipality per excellence but in the last decade of the 1990s there is a modest rise of industrial activity.
It is located to the east southeast of the same in the 22046 'Latitude N and the 81045 Longitude W, limiting to the North with the municipality of Madruga; to the East with the municipality Union de Reyes, pertaining to the province of Matanzas; To the South with the waters of the Cove of the Broa, in the Gulf of Batabanó and to the West with the municipality of San Nicolas.
It has a territorial extension of approximately 513 km2, which gives it the third place at provincial level, with 9% of the total area.
Municipal head and population settlements
In 1994 the municipality was structured in five Popular Councils, four of them urban rural (Vegas_ (Nueva_Paz), Los Palos, 2 de Mayo and Manuel Island) and one totally rural: The South one. Where the Popular Council of Vegas assumed the attention of 11.98 km2 of the municipality of San Nicolás, with two human settlements included (La Aguada and Primer Paso) of the 18 registered in the territory.
It has a total population in thousands of inhabitants of 25,015 inhab. (12 576 men ans 12 439 women).
