It promotes human rights and the state of law in its fields of competence, with particular emphasis on the right to education, the right to information, freedom of opinion and expression, cultural rights and the right to participate in the scientific advances and progress.
UNESCO works to combat the illegal import, the export and trafficking of cultural property and the destruction of cultural heritage. In a global effort to ensure that cultural protection is a pillar of peace building, and in followin-up the recent United Nations Security Council resolution 2199 (2015), condemning the destruction of cultural heritage and adopting legally binding measures to combat illicit trafficking of cultural objects.
UNESCO advocates for the promotion of human rights and related instruments through monitoring its implementation; the promotion and strengthening of capacities and reporting mechanisms; the assistance to Member States to review and develop their national legal frameworks and through the investigation and specialized analysis related with policies.
