On the occasion of the celebration of the World Environment Day, the words of Fidel are timely, when, with his global vision, he took part in various scenarios on the subject.
On July 26, 1996, in his speech at the central ceremony for the XLIII Anniversary of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks, he expressed: "What is going to happen with the environment? Every day there are more problems with pollution, every day they are more serious, every day the waters and the air are more poisoned; the terrestrial atmosphere warms, the waters rise, the natural catastrophes or great droughts that plague us multiply ".
"And nobody knows the catastrophic consequences; or you know, unfortunately, but there is no awareness, within the empire or of many developed countries, of these problems".
The historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, spokesman and broad defender of the environment, spoke at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 12, 1992, in which he said: "It is necessary to point out that consumer societies are fundamentally responsible for the atrocious destruction of the environment. They were born from the old colonial metropolises and from imperial policies that, in turn, engendered the backwardness and poverty that today afflict the immense majority of humanity. "
Also when in his speech at the closing of the Summit of Ministers of Health of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, Palace of Conventions, June 26, 1998 said: "We trust in humanity, we trust in man, and humanity does not he will let himself be annihilated, nor will he let them annihilate his nature, his waters, his seas, his resources. "
In Cuba, referring also to the protection of humanity and the Mother Earth, he said on March 28, 2007: "... In our country, the land dedicated to the direct production of alcohol can be much more useful in the production of food for the people and in the protection of the environment ".
Fidel Castro, not only stood out for his fight against capitalism and inequality, he was also a tireless defender of the environment.
He widely criticized the destruction of nature, the waste of resources, the pollution of the environment and supported the idea that the world and nature could be saved.
