His loyalty to Fidel and Raúl was infinite, a simple man, modest, with an affable, generous and vertical behaviour in his principles. Genaro Hernández Martínez worked as an agricultural worker and cane cutter in Nueva Paz.

After the coup d'etat of March 10, 1952, he began to engage in activities against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. At the end of that year, he began to practice with weapons at the University of Havana. Genaro is selected to participate in the assault to the history.

After his release from the Boniato prison, he returns to his hometown to continue the conspiracy activities. He attends a clandestine meeting with Melba Hernández and Haydée Santamaría and receives concrete guidance to continue the fight.

He continues the first semester of the year 1955 immerse in mobilization activities. Fidel directs him to organize the July 26 movement in his municipality.

In a meeting held at the end of that year in the house of Tomás David Rodríguez, the agreement of its creation and structure was taken, and Genaro was appointed responsible in Vegas.

Later he participated in the organization of the cells, in the distribution of propaganda, carrying out sabotage and collecting weapons. He circulates the pamphlet History Will Absolve Me and Manifestos No. 1 and No. 2. He also worked actively in the Strike on April 9.

He suffered imprisonment along with Miguel Sotolongo and Guillermo Elizalde. He was included among the organizers of the plan to support the Granma’s landing, in coordination with the San Nicolás group.

When the Revolution triumphed in 1959, he returned to Cuba and held different responsibilities in the Party and the Government, in the province of Havana. He was among the founders of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), the Militias and the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR). For the merits before the Homeland he received numerous decorations and distinctions.

He died at 80 years of age.
