Gabriel Gil Alfonso, was born on March 24, 1924, in a rustic house located on the outskirts of Casiguas, municipality of Jaruco. Coming from a humble family, he was the tenth of twelve brothers. He could only reach the third grade, at ten years of age and worked with his father in the harsh tasks of the field. Looking to improve the economic situation he moved to Havana.

In 1948 he joined the ranks of the Party of the Cuban Orthodox People, headed by Eduardo Chibás. At the end of 1951 he joined a committee in support of Fidel's candidacy and later assumed its leadership. He was the most combative and radical.

With the coup of March 10, 1952, led by Fulgencio Batista, Gil feels hurt in his deepest revolutionary convictions. That same day, in the morning, he went to the University of Havana, to express his willingness to fight tyranny with weapons in hand.

Gil, guided by Fidel, organized a revolutionary cell in the neighborhood of Lawton to overthrow the tyranny through the armed struggle, fulfilled all the tasks entrusted by the Leader of the Revolution. He participated in practices and training, as well as demonstrations against tyranny, such as the March of the Torches on January 27, 1953, the eve of the centenary of José Martí’s birthday.

He participated in the assault on the Moncada Garrison on July 26, 1953 and after the failure of the action he was condemned for those events and transferred to the prison in Isla de Pinos.

On February 12, 1954, when the dictator Fulgencio Batista visited the prison, he sang along with his 25 companions, the March of July 26. Thanks to the amnesty on May 15, 1955 he was released.

He visited his hometown where several companions were waiting for him to continue the fight. On August 9, 1956, Gil leaves for Mexico to join the expedition that was already prepared and is part of the 82 expeditions of the Granma yacht.

He held various political and administrative positions. He was founder of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and delegate to the First Congress. For his outstanding merits, he was awarded several decorations by the Council of State.
