Pinar del Rio, Cuba_ Different social sectors of the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio have expressed today their satisfaction to host the venue of the central event for National Rebellion Day, Prensa Latina reports.

Health, tourism, culture and sports workers, students, local officials of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), combatants who participated in the 1953 assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Barracks and the Granma Yacht expedition and the population in general packed the Provisional Revolution Square from very early hours..

Olga Batista, a resident, has said that holding the venue of the national act on July 26 represents a double honor, as it also pays tribute to the 150th anniversary of the granting of the city title by Spain’s Queen Elizabeth.

On the other hand, the local journalist Alberto Hernandez stated that this opportunity is a stimulus that promises to continue fostering the provincial economic development and thus contribute to Cuba's progress.

This official act is also attended by different foreign delegations, as part of the 10,000 guests to this commemoration.

Among them, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Cuba, the Pastors for Peace Caravan, the Venceremos brigade and foreign students residing on the Caribbean island.

Holavio Fonseca, an Angolan student from Ernesto Guevara University of Medical Sciences, said he felt privileged to have the chance of experiencing this special moment in Cuba, which he termed it a demonstration of patriotism and determination.

Pinar del Rio hosts once again the venue of the national event for July 26, after 17 years of its first experience as host city.

On July 26, 1953, a group of young people led by Fidel Castro carried out the assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks, located in the east of the country.

Although on that date they could not achieve their objective of calling to the insurrection against Fulgencio Batista (1952-1959), the gesture inspired that little more than three years later the armed struggle was resumed until reaching the definitive revolutionary triumph in January of 1959.
