Caracas: Venezuela wants the renovation of the National Assembly (Parliament in contempt since 2016) to make progress in the process of political stabilization, President of the Republic Nicolas Maduro said.

During the activation of the Council of Defense and Security, at the Miraflores Palace (the venue of the Government), the president underlined the need to address in that body the possible call for legislative elections before the end of the term in 2020, Prensa Latina reports.

Maduro described that issue as a priority for the government delegation at the negotiation table with the opposition in Norway to seek a solution to the political crisis in the country.

The National Assembly, which has an opposition majority, was declared in contempt by the Supreme Court of Justice on January 5, 2016, after the swearing in of three lawmakers from the state of Amazonas who were suspended due to irregularities during the elections.

On January 23, Parliament Speaker Juan Guaido proclaimed himself the 'interim president' of the country with automatic support from the governments of the United States and other countries in the region, an act of usurpation that Venezuelan authorities denounced as an attempted coup d'état.

Maduro spoke on Tuesday at the permanent session of the Council of Defense and Security, in order to guarantee political stability and to strengthen institutionality and democracy.

During the meeting with the top representatives of the constituent, judicial, electoral, citizens and executive powers, the president called to use all capacities and strengths of the State to preserve peace and make progress in the economic recovery of the country.

Maduro warned about the interventionist pretensions of the US administration of Donald Trump, in complicity with sectors of the Venezuelan opposition, before which the country must 'react in time and with serenity, institutional and revolutionary strength, in defense of (...) the constitution, the right to peace, development and life. '

Venezuela faces an extremist and coup-driven policy, driven by Washington against the South American nation, in order to put an end to the Bolivarian Revolution, overthrow the legitimate Government and destroy the State through the political, economic, military and media power of the country. , he stressed.

In this scenario, the Venezuelan president highlighted the performance of the National Constituent Assembly in terms of the political stability of the country, in the midst of combating adverse factors, the economic blockade, financial and commercial persecution.

The president supported the decision adopted by the plenipotentiary body to extend its period of validity until December 2020, while reiterating the need to call legislative elections to renew the National Assembly, parliamentary body in contempt since 2016.
