Caracas: Venezuela today assumes with humility and dignity the historical role of resisting the attacks of the United States Government against the free peoples of the continent, President Nicolás Maduro said.

Through a message on the social network Twitter, Maduro thanked the Declaration of Solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution issued the day before by the more than 100 delegates to the first Latin American Meeting of Local Governments and Participatory Democracy, held in Caracas, Prensa Latina publishes.

'Extraordinary meeting with the representatives of the Local Governments of Latin America and the Caribbean. The leaders (...) progressives of the continent carried out a broad debate that opens the way to the definitive integration of the peoples of the Great Homeland”, the president said in the communication platform.

Venezuela is going through the initial stage of the construction of a 'new and powerful' political model of protagonist and participatory democracy, said the head of state when intervening in the event.

The South American nation must advance even more in the goal of converting the great network of popular organizations into a permanent power of decision, and assured that only the forces of the people are capable of bringing about great changes in society, Maduro said.

A hundred mayors, governors, councilors and progressive leaders from 19 Latin American and Caribbean countries, participated in the regional meeting, with an agenda focused on the strengthening of popular governments of local management, together with direct and participatory democracy in the continent.

The delegates ratified the solidarity with Venezuela against the threats and sanctions of the US Government, by means of a declaration in which they expressed the recognition of the legitimacy of the Bolivarian Government, led by the constitutionally and democratically elected president, Nicolás Maduro .

They advocated respect for non-interference and non-intervention in the internal affairs of countries, the right to peace and respect for the will of dialogue of political actors, having the means and mechanisms attached to the Constitution and in the scope of international law.

The declaration of solidarity acknowledged the great advances in terms of attention to vulnerable populations, expressed from the creation of social missions that guarantee the right to housing, health, free education and the right to land, among others.

He also denounced the communication fence established against Venezuela, which prevents the transparent transmission of the reality of the social situation, through a campaign of media manipulation aimed at distorting the truth and conditioning public opinion and social behavior.

The delegates to the event recognized the solidary nature of the Venezuelan Government and people, giving shelter to millions of Latin American and Caribbean migrants and the rest of the world for years.

Finally, they called on the international community to defend the principles of sovereignty and popular self-determination, peace, participatory democracy and the construction of a multicentric and pluripolar world.
