The European Union (EU) is a unique economic and political association of 28 European countries that together comprise a large part of the continent.

The origin of the EU is in the period after the Second World War. Its first steps were to foster economic cooperation with the idea that, as economic interdependence between countries increased, the potential for conflict would diminish.

In 1958 the European Economic Community (EEC) was created, which initially established closer economic cooperation between six countries: Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Subsequently, a large single market was created which continues to move towards achieving its full potential.

And what began as a purely economic union has evolved into an active organization on all political fronts, from climate to the environment and from health to external relations and security, through justice and migration. The change of name from European Economic Community (EEC) to European Union (EU) in 1993 only reflected this transformation.

The EU is based on the rule of law: all its activities are based on treaties, agreed voluntarily and democratically by member countries.

Besides, the EU is governed by the principle of representative democracy: citizens are directly represented in the European Parliament, while the Member States are represented in the European Council and the EU Council.
