Xiomara Castro wins the majority of the municipalities in Honduras.

Tegucigalpa: The virtual president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, leader of the opposition bloc headed by the Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) appears today as the winner in 189 of the 298 municipalities, according to preliminary reports.

According to Prensa Latina, the report issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE) confirmed that the victory of the alliance, also made up of the Salvador de Honduras, Innovación y Unidad Social Demócrata and Honduras Humana parties, is similar to that achieved by the official organization Nacional in the 2017 elections.

The triumph of Castro and Libre is also reflected in 17 of the 18 departments, with a wide margin of difference between the main candidates for the highest leadership position, although these eleven elections, since the return to democracy in the 1980s, predicted a closed political contest.

According to forecasts, the opposition bloc leads in six out of every 10 municipalities, 63 percent of the total of these demarcations, and represents almost double that achieved by the candidate of the National Party, Nasry Asfura, at the forefront in 88 jurisdictions.

This partial count also determines that the ruling party accumulated three times fewer districts than in the 2017 elections, when 220 of them predominated, and highlights that it lost significant regions and areas, with historical superiority, among these, the Central District that includes Tegucigalpa, the capital; and San Pedro Sula, the second most important city and economic center of the country.

Even Asfura reached just 38.5 percent of the votes compared to 51.9 percent for Xiomara Castro in the Central District, a municipality traditionally dyed blue and where, precisely, the candidate of the ruling party has been its mayor for a long time.
