Georgetown: The Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, assumes today in virtual ceremony the presidency of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) for the next six months, amid the confrontation with the Covid-19 pandemic, Prensa Latina publishes.
During the online Conference of Heads of Government, the president of the Caribbean bloc and Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley will hand over command of the regional mechanism to her counterpart Ralph Gonsalves, who will represent the community at international summits and forums in the final stretch of the year.
The 15 member states and the five partners will also address the joint response to the new coronavirus disease, SAR-CoV-2, which registers more than 8,360 infections in the Caribbean area at the special meeting.
Gonsalves will guide Caricom’s efforts after Mottley’s tenure, who ended his term with a favorable 48.4 percent outlook according to a poll by Caribbean site Kevz Politics.
According to the Caribbean Media Corporation, regional leaders will hold a face-to-face meeting in September in the capital of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
In the opinion of the Puebla Group, under the role of Gonsalves, the region will take risks in favor of integration, solidarity and resilience, in times of necessary leadership to face the health, economic, social, environmental and political crisis.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is an active member of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Peoples’ Trade Treaty and is a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
