Mayabeque, Cuba: That the 2020-2021 sugar harvest would be carried out in difficult conditions is not a secret, right now the delays in the execution of the plan at the Boris Luis Santa Coloma de Madruga sugar mill confirm this.
The drastic decrease in agricultural yields, from 60 tons per hectare in the previous season, to an average of 35 tons now, shows the complexity of the production process.
Right in the middle of the contest, strategies are redesigned to improve the flow of sugarcane to the industry, assured the Chief Agronomist of the sugarcane group in Boris Luis Santa Coloma, Osmani Cuello Marrero: “the level of raw material is less than the last year and we have to make the most of it, better framing the harvest, cutting the freshest sugarcane, cleaning it, grinding it with less time and being more efficient throughout the system?.
This counteracts the decrease in raw material for objective reasons. Sugar production is close to nine thousand tons, a result below the one agreed to date, according to the schedule.
The time lost due to lack of sugarcane, one of the main problems of the harvest, is used to carry out maintenance so that the machinery of the industry is in good condition, as specified by the Head of Industrial Maintenance, Sonia Montes de Oca: “We watch the stop, we see the approximate time without grinding due to lack of cane and we act in some maintenance activities”.
