Brasilia: The Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil will debate today the request for urgency in the actions of the State to help the Quilombola population, communities of descendants of slaves, to confront Covid-19, Prensa Latina publishes.
The appeal was presented to the superior court by five parties opposed to the government of Jair Bolsonaro and the National Coordinator of Articulation of Quilombolas Rural Black Communities (Conaq).
According to Conaq, it is demanded to adopt ‘measures related to the serious damage to the fundamental precepts of the Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil of 1988, resulting from the commissive and omisive acts of the Federal Executive Power in the fight against the Covid pandemic -19 in the Quilombola communities’.
The request emerged in parallel to the discussions on the immunization of this population segment in the country.
In December, the Ministry of Health even included it among the priority groups. But as soon as the vaccination campaign against the pathogen began, the list was modified.
Previously, Conaq denounced, since the beginning of the pandemic in February, the neglect of the far-right administration of Bolsonaro to the quilombolas.
Also in July, Ana Eugenia, a member of the Quilombos State Coordination of the state of Ceará (northeast), affirmed that the disease attacks the most vulnerable populations.
“Our mobilization as civil society is proof that public power is not doing its part,” she warned.
Similarly, according to the lawsuit, ‘due to the failure of the State to act to enable them to confront the effects of the pandemic on quilombos, they experience serious and avoidable injuries that significantly affect the possibility of continuity of physical reproduction, social, ethnic and cultural of each community ‘.
As of February 2, 195 deaths have been recorded since April 11, 2020, when the first among these reservations of descendants of slaves was reported.
This means that 19.5 of its members have died per month since the pandemic began. 5,119 infections and 1,456 under medical monitoring were also confirmed, according to a study by Conaq, in collaboration with the Socio-environmental Institute.
