Havana: Cuba is making progress in the assessment of damage and recovery after the recent passage of the tropical storm Elsa through the territory, all the while deploying prevention efforts against phenomena of this nature, Prensa Latina publishes.
The President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, evaluated on Tuesday the main effects caused by the impact of the storm this weekend and last Monday, and acknowledged the response of the authorities and the people.
The experience showed the country’s organizational capacity to face such events, with a coherent, precise and effective action, said the head of state, as reported by the website of the Presidency.
The president described the rains associated with Elsa as ‘beneficial’ and assured that the effects were felt fundamentally in the electric power grid, almost completely restored at this point; as well as in some houses, crops, roads and water supply or conduction systems.
During the government meeting, the president pondered how Cuba’s different management structures, with the participation of citizens, made it possible to face two complex problems at the same time: the Covid-19 pandemic and the tropical storm.
Díaz-Canel stressed that the work allowed training and preparation for the future occurrence of phenomena of greater intensity, and thus reduce possible damage to human lives and material resources, and warned about the importance of ‘continuing to work from prevention’, in a hurricane season with forecasts to be intense in the Caribbean region.
