Cuban President congratulates Olympic gold winner in boxing

Havana, Cuba: President Miguel Díaz-Canel congratulated boxer Arlen López on Twitter, who today contributed the fifth gold medal for Cuba at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Prensa Latina publishes.

López beat the British Benjamin Whittaker 4-1 in the final of the 81 kilograms of the joust, and placed Cuba in thirteenth place in the medal tables of this Olympic event, where the island’s delegation reached five medals to date of gold, three of silver and four of bronze.

In fact, that performance improves on that performed five years ago in Rio 2016, as well as temporarily placing it better in the overall medal table than in London 2012 and Beijing 2008.

This 28-year-old boxer thus repeats the highest award he obtained five years ago in Rio 2016, and joins the achievement achieved the day before by teammate Roniel Iglesias, while lightweight Lázaro Álvarez won a bronze medal.

Adding up those obtained in Tokyo so far, Cuba has obtained 82 gold, 69 silver and 81 bronze medals in Olympic events; boxing registers 39 titles, 19 silver medals and 17 third places.
