The director of the World Food Program team in that Central Asian nation, Mary Ellen McGroarty, and the head of field operations and emergencies of the United Nations Children’s Fund, Mustapha Ben Messaoud, will report virtually to the accredited press in United Nations.
The head of protection of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Afghanistan, Aurvasi Patel, will also participate in the online meeting, according to a statement released here.
The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, assured that the team of the multilateral organization in Afghan territory will maintain its presence there and is now working to adapt to the complex security situation.
As the headline stressed on Monday in the Security Council, the international community must not abandon the Afghan people at this time of great need.
The United Nations will stay and fulfill its commitment to support the population, Guterres stressed at an emergency meeting of that body convened after the Taliban took power.
The international community must unite and act with one voice to advocate for an inclusive government in Afghanistan and respect for human rights in general, and women’s rights in particular, the Portuguese diplomat told the press.
He also pointed out that he urges to guarantee that terrorism no longer has a safe haven in that country and for this, the unity of the Security Council and the international community is necessary.
The day before, Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with a delegation of the Taliban led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, co-founder of the Islamist armed movement.
The meeting comes a few hours after the Taliban took power in the Central Asian country, with little resistance from the Ashraf Ghani government and despite the many negotiations held in Doha.
Different countries have already evacuated their citizens and diplomatic personnel and numerous nationals are looking for ways to leave Afghanistan, especially those who worked for the previous administration or for the Americans, present in the Central Asian nation since the 2001 invasion.
