Brasilia: The Workers’ Party (PT) of Brazil today repudiated the visit of the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, scheduled for tomorrow to the city of Boa Vista, in the northern state of Roraima, on the border with Venezuela, Prensa Latina publishes.
Signed by its president, Gleisi Hoffmann, the PT indicates in a note its deep concern about the arrival of the head of US diplomacy in that area, where he will meet with Venezuelan immigrants.
The administration of the far-right president Jair Bolsonaro “demonstrates once again its submission to the dictates of the Donald Trump government, always being open to following his orders and receiving his representatives in our territory, in a continuous process of offending our sovereignty”, the political organization denounces.
It assures that Pompeo will take advantage of the visit to support a population that, “according to the United States Government, is fleeing an alleged illegitimate regime of Nicolás Maduro.”
However, the PT says, the accusations against Maduro are completely unfounded and it is not possible to accuse a government elected in a democratic and legal process.
“Illegitimate is the constant interference of the United States in the sovereign affairs of other countries”, the text remarks.
It points out that it is strange that this trip by Pompey also includes other nations such as Suriname, Guyana and Colombia, the latter like Brazil, allies of Washington in their hostility towards Venezuela.
“The PT will not remain silent in the face of this attack on our country and will follow the path that it has always followed in its defense, its total independence in international relations and the application of a sovereign policy for all of South America”, the communication, also signed by the secretary of International Relations of the party, Romênio Pereira, said.
In this regard, former Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorin also stated that Pompeo’s presence in the national territory is obviously a provocation against Caracas.
This is the only explanation for the visit of the US Secretary of State to Boa Vista, which is the gateway to the neighboring country, he warned.
