The United States holds a long-awaited debate between vice presidential candidates.

Washington: The candidates for the vice presidency of the United States, Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Kamala Harris, will face each other today amid the crisis unleashed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which even infected President Donald Trump, Prensa Latina publishes.

The expected showdown between Pence, current vice president, and Harris, federal senator and former California attorney general, will be the only one of its kind during the current election campaign and will be held at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Pence has intensified his campaign since Trump was marginalized on Friday after testing positive for coronavirus and according to his surroundings he will travel to Arizona after the meeting, where the polls give Democrat Joseph Biden an advantage over Trump.

Both contenders spent part of the weekend preparing for the bid, which took on new importance after Trump’s hospitalization elevated the role of the vice president and caused both sides to re-evaluate their strategy in the final stretch of the campaign.

The debate is also seen as a political test for Pence and Harris, the former for being a potential candidate for 2024, while the senator from California is seen as a leader for the younger generation of the Democratic Party.

The race for the White House remains tense despite a CNN poll found that Biden leads the president, with a 16-point lead nationally (57 to 41 percent).
