The Assault on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba was part of an armed action carried out on July 26, 1953 in order to overthrow the dictator Fulgencio Batista, by a group of men and women members of the Orthodox party under the command of Fidel Castro.

The action was completed with the attack to Carlos Manuel de Cespedes barracks in Bayamo, and was quickly defeated. During the trial of the attackers, Fidel Castro summed up his defense by pointing out the torture carried out by the government to the point that he was declared ill to avoid his presence at the trial. In spite of this he presented his written plea, historical document that became known as The Story Will Absolve Me.
