Guatemala on alert for new caravan of Honduran migrants.

Guatemala: A caravan of Honduran migrants going to the United States (US) could reach the Guatemalan border in the next few hours, the Migration Institute warned today.

According to Prensa Latina, the mobilization, in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, would leave tomorrow from a square in San Pedro Sula, where at least 200 people began to gather the day before.

Guatemalan immigration authorities indicated that they maintain monitoring with their Honduran counterparts to coordinate entry, although no movement is reported yet on the Corinto and Agua Caliente borders.

The neighboring country was hit last November by the climatic events Eta and Iota with a balance of more than 3.5 million affected by rains and floods, a situation similar to that experienced by communities in 10 departments of the Quetzal land under State of Public Calamity in seven of them.

The first caravan of 2020 with four thousand Hondurans arrived on October 5 and the Executive ordered a State of Prevention to detain and repatriate its members in the face of the danger of the spread of Covid-19 after breaking into national territory by force.
