Mayabeque, Cuba: The National Center for Bio-preparations of the BioCubaFarma business group, located in Mayabeque, received the 2020 Carlos J Finlay Award, which distinguishes contributions to development and for the benefit of humanity, announced an official source.
Also, a group of 23 scientists and two other institutions of the BioCubaFarma business group involved in the development of its own vaccine against Covid-19 were awarded: the Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM) and the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).
In a press release, the president of the evaluation commission of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, María Luisa Zamora, also highlighted that two groups deserved the award: the Fernando Ortiz Foundation and the Henry Reeve International Brigade, of the Ministry of Public Health.
The list of laureates includes, among others, Dr. Tania Crombet Ramos, from the Center for Molecular Immunology, who was chosen to participate in an International Panel of experts as an Advisory Group for the confrontation of Covid-19 in the world.
She is the leader of the studies of Itoluzimab, the monoclonal antibody redirected to the treatment of severe and critical Covid-19, she is also the director of Clinical Research at CIM, and one of the authors of CIMAvax-EGF, the therapeutic vaccine against cancer of lung.
She also deserved the award in 2020 her colleague Belinda Sánchez, in charge of the trials to provide the RBD protein, the precise antigen to develop the anti-Covid-19 Sovereign formulation, from the Finlay Vaccine Institute.
Three other researchers from CIGB joined the list of winners: Enrique Rosendo Pérez, Viviana Falcón and Mónica Bequet; as well as Maribel Guerra, Alina Rodríguez and Marta Carralero, from BioCubaFarma.
Scientists from the AZCUBA Sugar Group, Fundamental Research in Agriculture, the National Center for Seismological Research and the Institute of Literature and Linguistics, among others from the social and economic sciences swell the list.
